i'm not discounting the fiscal cliff but i think a lot of this is sell on the news related to the federal reserve. we have seen this news before. remember, take a look at the s&p 500. i don't think it is a coincidence we hit the highs of year september 14th. that's the day after the fed meeting when they announced quantitative ease meetings. they bought into the fed meeting then started selling immediately after. we saw thmovie before and they e doing this before. two months high on the dow jones industrial, a two-month chart of the dow jones industrial average, and you will see. there are the highs. and we are drifting lower here. i put more of this on sell on the news of the fed. spike and bond yields got a lot of e-mails talking about inflation in 2013. this has not been a successful trade but number of the etfs exist out there. spider gold trust with the classic hedge against inflation. one to five-year tips. very big etf. then you can even bet against long-term treasuries with the shares ultra short. only works for a day. but none of these have been particularly successful this year.

part of the new year, there's not a solution early that deals not only with the fiscal cliff but also the fiscal abyss, that he expect this is to start affecting hiring plans for 2014, as well. is that a serious concern for your manufacturing base at this point? >> i think it is a very serious concern. we did a survey, a study a couple months ago called fiscal shock. and it showed that we've already seen a 0.6% contraction in the economy because of manufacturers concerns about the fiscal cliff that's coming up. and the report also showed that if we go over the cliff, meaning if we just go over it in the first few days of next year, that we could have a 13% cumulative contraction in the gdp between now and 2015. and 6 million jobs lost. now, a lot of those will come from small and medium sized manufacturers who just aren't willing to take the risk, but i think you're talking to doug in a little bit and larger companies like caterpillar and doug is the incoming chair of the national association of manufacturers, companies like caterpillar rely on those supply chains. so they want to mak

what we're watching is the parallels that occur now, where we stood with the fiscal cliff and where we stood in 1999 with the y2k situation. we borrowed a lot of growth in 1999 from 2000, and that led us to a recession. we're looking at the same thing now. we're seeing people have accelerated dividends, pre-payments, seeing a lot of companies that single proprietors are paying themselves this year in anticipation of higher rates. >> it's interesting that you point that out. it could be argued at the same time that we're delaying growth until next year because of the number of companies that have delayed hiring or capital expenditures because of the uncertainty about the fiscal cliff. >> yeah. well, uncertainty, unfortunately, is perhaps going to continue with this because the regulations are not going to go away there. may be a little bit more clarity but we're still writing up the regs on dodd/frank and looking at the health care thing. that won't be resolved in the first quarter. >> taking a cautious attitude. >> we think this is probably good. the numbers won't manifest themselves u
